الاستثناء بإلّا— Exception with إلّا

In a COMPLETE, POSITIVE sentence, the noun after إلّا is obligatorily منصوب: حَضَرَ الطُّلَّابُ إِلَّا حَامِدًا. In a NEGATIVE sentence with the مستثنى منه mentioned, it may be منصوب or match the مستثنى منه's case as a بدل: مَا حَضَرَ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا حَامِدٌ / حَامِدًا. When the مستثنى منه is not mentioned at all (الاستثناء المفرَّغ), the noun takes whatever case the sentence demands, as if إلّا were absent: مَا رَأَيْتُ إِلَّا حَامِدًا، مَا مَرَرْتُ إِلَّا بِحَامِدٍ.
