المفعول لأجله— The Accusative of Purpose

المفعول لأجله is an accusative مصدر that states the reason behind an action — قُمْتُ إِجْلَالًا لِلْمُدَرِّسِ, "I stood up out of respect for the teacher," or سَافَرَ طَلَبًا لِلْعِلْمِ, "he traveled seeking knowledge." It answers "لماذا؟" (why?). The key test that separates it from المفعول المطلق is the root: المفعول لأجله always comes from a different root than the verb, while المفعول المطلق shares the verb's own root.
