المفعول معه— The Accusative of Association

المفعول معه is an accusative noun following واو المعية ("and along with"), as in مَشَيْتُ وَالنَّهْرَ — "I walked alongside the river" — or كَيْفَ أَنْتَ وَبِلَالًا؟. It differs from an ordinary واو العطف (coordinating "and"): after عطف the following noun shares the case of what precedes it and takes part in the same action, while after واو المعية the noun is simply accompanying — always منصوب, regardless of what comes before.
